A Road Trip To Lyon

After waking early and padding barefoot into the kitchen with cats in tow, their meows piercing the early morning silence I realised what day it was; road trip day. Was I really about to embark upon an adventure with a person I’d only met a few times and exchanged many an iMessage with? Yes, it looked like I was.

I showered, got dressed and packed my gym bag with the bare essentials. I’m a light traveler when it comes to personal belongings however I take travel food very seriously and I’d put together a bag full of homemade healthy snacks to keep us going.

I left home in my little beaten up Ford Fiesta heading for the airport to pick up my road trip buddy.Airports have always and (I hope) will always install in me a sense of excitement speckled with a pinch of nervousness, this time was no different. He arrived on time after catching two flights and we drove to Vilanova where we picked up his car – a stunning blue Maserati; slightly newer than my car, most definitely faster and all around awesome machine. When did I turn into this girl who secretly loves amazing cars? Is this really my new guilty pleasure?

We set off at half past twelve on a beautifully sunny Spring Wednesday. The engine roared and excitement took over as I realised this was actually happening. After every toll booth we sped off onto the open road, the engine whistling whilst I let out a little squeal of delight and clapped my hands. Our playlist included the greats such as Guns ‘n’ Roses, The Proclaimers, The Killers and of course The Spice Girls. It goes without saying that we played Yellow Car/Mini for the duration of the journey- a road trip staple.

Road trips are a special thing, you have nothing to do but chat away with those you’re traveling with. Discovering their likes, dislike, beliefs and unknown sides. On a road trip I can travel for great lengths of time without getting fed up, on a 12 hour trip I’ll happily sit and chat away until the last 10 minutes. This is when I go into car meltdown crying “I just want to get there!!” However on this trip the words never passed through my mind let alone my lips.

We reached Lyon at nine that evening, checking into Cour Des Loges an incredible hotel with French renaissance character and style. The staff were friendly and helpful and the room delightfully interesting in it’s classic French decor. After leaving our bags in the room we headed downstairs to the brasserie to enjoy a delicious meal by candlelight. The waiters and waitresses were attentive and tried very hard to accommodate my (v.special) dietary requirements.

On Thursday we awoke early heading downstairs to breakfast. I enjoyed a scrumptious fruit salad and a selection of dried fruit and nuts. We explored Lyon in the morning venturing up to The Basilica of Notre-dame De Fourviere which is a treat for the eyes with it’s beautiful architecture and surroundings.

Afterwards we took in the Gallo Roman Amphitheatres which are just spectacular. The mind boggles at just the though of how The Romans were able to create such grand and vast buildings without the use of heavy machinery. With lunch time upon us we headed to Place Bellecour, my eyes flit from one thing to the next, my senses at an all time high with the hustle and bustle going on around us. Sadly with the recent attacks in Brussels I couldn’t help but dwell for just a moment on what ifs. It is sad that the world is in this sorry state of affairs, I wonder will we ever travel again without  becoming even the tiniest bit suspicious of those around us?

After lunch it was time to part ways as my road trip buddy continued on his journey to Germany with me flying back to Barcelona.

We joked throughout the journey about how the road changed people and when I question if this road trip has changed me even in the slightest, I’m inclined to say, all joking aside, it has.

It has made me realise that I want to see more of this awe-inspiring rock we call Earth. I want to travel more and go on as many adventures as possible. Because, at the end of the day it’s all about the memories we create and very little else.
