I learned a lesson this weekend.
We need to take breaks. Both physically and mentally we need to take breaks.
Just because we spend all of our time working, doesn’t necessarily mean we’re being productive.
And you see, in the world we live in, we can work twenty four hours a day, with our emails, social media, messages all at our finger tips. I feel guilty for taking even just half an hour for myself. Which is exactly what I did on Saturday.
The grand majority of people I know, have full time jobs and then spend the rest of their waking hours working on what they actually want to dedicate their lives too. We then somehow juggle it all, fitting in time with family and friends, time to do the washing, clean our homes, cook food, (okay, I’ll admit to eating one too many cereal based meals a week.) exercise, go to after work social nights. But where is the “me” time? Where does that come in?
When was the last time you did something that you enjoyed doing, just for the hell of it, just because you could, without trying to multitask or cutting it short because the guilt became all too overwhelming? I got in the kitchen this morning and made pancakes just for the pure enjoyment of making them and eating them. In the kitchen nowadays I’m usually recipes creating and testing.
We are part of a generation that is used to having everything instantly. We also expect that when we work hard, put in the effort and do our best we should reap the benefits instantaneously too. What we tend to forget is that life doesn’t always work like that.
I read this post at the weekend, there was a quote in there that really stood out to me. In fact I kind of want to get it printed. I’d get it tattooed on myself, but I’m not the tattoo type.
“Patience is also a form of action.”
I love this. Because patience is a form of action, yet we feel bad for waiting, we’ll sometimes mess things up because we aren’t patient enough, trying a different way all together. But there’s that age old saying “Good things come to those who wait.” It’s kind of lingering in the back of my mind a lot at the moment.
A yoga teacher once said to me, never rush off before enjoying that moment’s peace at the end of your practice. You know the part where you just lie there on the floor? Because that is the most important part of it all, that’s when the nutrients of your practice settle into your body. That’s the reason you got onto your mat in the first place.
We’re so quick to hop onto our theoretical yoga mat of life, only to dash off without allowing all the good stuff to settle.
I think it’s about time we learn to slow down every now and then, to take a step back and watch our projects flourish. We must truly appreciate the goals we have accomplished if we are to work towards bigger ones.
