Since starting this blog nearly two years ago, I’ve asked myself the same question millions of times. What is my niche? What do I specialise in?!
I’ve had blogs before, I had my own online shop, I even had an online magazine I worked full time on, which was moderately successful…they all had niches. Yet, even though I followed every piece of advice with these websites, I didn’t like them, I ended up closing them down all for the same reason – they didn’t feel right…they didn’t feel like me.
Why did I start pe-ta.com?
I wanted a place that was all mine, a place I could share my stories, my life, my cats, my food and all the wonderful moments I experience. Taking a step back, I can see that this is exactly what it is. It’s always important to remember why you started.
As online peeps (I won’t use the word influencers – I think it is SO overused nowadays) we are bombarded with advice, e-mails, videos, newsletters, posts, allll about what we should be doing, and what we could be achieving if we were to do it. We begin searching for our “niche”. How do we sell ourselves? Who are we?! Eventually it starts chipping away at our personalities, our identities.
I’m calling bullshit. I wrote a post on not needing a niche exactly a year ago, and I still stand by all that I said. I don’t think you need a specific purpose to succeed, I don’t think you need a niche as such. I think you need to be you. An honest, truthful, raw portrayal of you – not every part of you but the parts you want to share with the world. You are your own niche, you are you and noone, no matter how hard they try, can replicate that.
So, if you think along the same lines as I do, just be completely and utterly unapologetically you and those who get you will love you for it, and those who don’t just aren’t your kind of readers.
